The companies that paid for the flights, a normal means of travel to remote and often roadless parts of Alaska, are both in the early stages of a lengthy approval process. Barrick Gold Corp. spent $805 flying Todd Palin in September 2007 to Donlin Creek, where it hopes to build an open-pit gold mine on Native-owned land. The company hasn’t submitted any permit applications yet.

Some other doodads on barrick.

...Some of the loot for the Republican effort in the 1997–2000 election cycles came from an outfit called Barrick Corporation.

McCain and Deripaska first met at a dinner party held concurrently with the Davos World Economic Forum in January 2006 in Switzerland. The party was hosted by Canadian gold mining billionaire Peter Munk, owner of Barrick Gold, which has counted former President George H. W. Bush, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Senator Howard Baker, major Democratic Party lawyer/lobbyist Vernon Jordan, and former German Central Bank President Karl Otto Pohl among the members of its International Advisory Board. The party was arranged by McCain's 2000 campaign manager Rick Davis of the Washington lobbying group Davis Manafort. Attending the meeting in Davos were McCain, Davis, Deripaska, and Senators Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and John Sununu (R-NH), as well as the host, Munk.

9-14-08: A rebroadcast: Peltier FOIA hearing w/ Attny Michael Kuzma

Honored Guests: Native American Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier's Attorney Michael Kuzma

Topic: FOIA Hearing

"Leonard Peltier's unjust incarceration remains a festering sore that impedes better race relations in America. Surely the time has come to promote healing and a spirit of trust and genuine goodwill toward the Indian peoples of America with an act that serves both compassion and justice."
~~ the late Coretta Scott King

Phone in guest: Michael Kuzma Esq., Arguing attorney for Leonard Peltier

Special Guest: Michael Kuzma Esq., Arguing attorney for Leonard Peltier; Sr. Legislative Assistant to City Council President, Buffalo, New York....

On 5-1-08 from 7-8:00PM PST.Michael Kuzma, Esq. fresh out of a "FOIA Hearing" on Leonard Peltier's behalf called in on NAMAPAHH First People's Radio. Kuzma spoke about the Freedom of Information Act and how it could benefit Native American Political prisoner Leonard Peltier, who still waits for his Freedom....

Mr.Kuzma introduced those unfamiliar with Native American Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier's case. Back in the late 1970's Peltier, who was a member of the American Indian Movement at the time, was charged with murder & convicted with the deaths of two FBI special agents, Jack Coler & Ronald Williams. These two agents died due to gunshot wounds on June 26, 1975 during a major shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Mr. Kuzma also updated those of us who have long followed Peltier's case, many who even filled the streets with the chant "What do we want... 'Justice'...when do we want it... 'Now'... 'Free Leonard Peltier....."

Considering the time period in some people's minds, this could be considered just another Indian War, but modern day...many people died on Pine Ridge back then and sad to say many people are still dying on Pine Ridge. How many Native American people died at the hands and neglect by the US Government, for generations?

Isn't this supposed to be a Democracy that has been mandated by treaties to take care of tribal people? Isn't this the same US Govt. that has sent countless men & women off to the Middle East in the name of Democracy?

What is wrong with this picture? What happened to a fair trial? Why is Leonard still serving two life sentences? Why won't the FBI agency free these crucial records, claiming to withhold it in the name of "National Security"? What will the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit decide after this hearing that happened last week? If Leonard's constitutional rights can be violated, what about yours/mine/future generations to come?

This is an election year, as we are all too well aware of- It's time for Justice, Leonard deserves a fair trial, like every person who lives in America.

A BLACKFEET'S CRUSADE TO SETTLE ACCOUNTS WITH US
By Todd Wilkinson | Special to The Christian Science Monitor

http://www. csmonitor. com/2002/0320/p01s03-ussc. html

BROWNING, MONT. – On a cold wind-blown slope outside town, there is a piece of hallowed ground called Ghost Ridge. It was here, a century ago, that Blackfeet Indians perished after the US government failed to deliver promised food rations.

And it is here, today, that Elouise Cobell sometimes walks as she gathers strength for her ongoing crusade: Forcing the government to hand over billions of dollars she alleges it has withheld from native Americans.

"When I'm feeling exhausted," says the Blackfeet accountant and banker, "I visit Ghost Ridge and I wonder how painful it must've been for my people to starve to death in the middle of winter. Then I have a chat with myself ... 'Elouise, what are you complaining about? You're a wimp if you can't deal with this.
' "

Mrs. Cobell's relentless attention to the details of financial accounting has made the bashful woman a living legend in the eyes of native Ameri- cans and a thorn in the side of bureaucrats in two presidential administrations.

She's already won several skirmishes in her David-like battle with the government Goliath. Her class-action lawsuit against the US government seeks $12 billion in restitution for revenues owed from mining, logging, and other development on millions of acres of Indian land.

The suit, on behalf of 500,000 native Americans, both living and dead, revolves around the inability of the US Interior and Treasury Departments to provide written records of what happened to billions of dollars owed by the Individual Indian Monies trust fund, set up a century ago to manage Indian lands and the revenues produced by them. The trust currently generates about $500 million a year – with payments ranging from pennies to millions of dollars for individual Indians, depending on the size of their shareholdings.

This case is the native-American equivalent of the Enron scandal, says Tex Hall, president of the National Congress of American Indians. "The only difference is that the Cobell case is bigger ... the government is playing the role of Enron, and this has been going on a lot longer.
"

The case has consumed the energies of Interior Secretary Gale Norton, who faces contempt-of-court charges because she was unable to produce financial records.

Numerous investigations have confirmed shoddy bookkeeping for more than a century. When pressed by US District Judge Royce Lamberth, Ms. Norton and her predecessor, Bruce Babbitt, admitted that many key accounting documents have been lost, destroyed, or never existed.

The Interior Department declined to comment on the case.

As a child on the Blackfeet reservation not far from the Canadian border, Cobell was raised without plumbing, electricity, telephone, or running water. A vivid memory is of her parents and grandparents sitting around a woodstove complaining about government checks not arriving or amounting to less than they should have been. She often asked why that was.

Only after serving as Blackfeet tribe treasurer did she get answers. Noticing irregularities in royalty checks to tribal members, she began to keep records.

'NOTHING MATCHED UP'

"When I tried to correlate the payments with government books kept by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, nothing matched up. Some months, a check would arrive, but then it might take months before the next one came in the mail," she recalls.

What started out as her challenge to reconcile differences on the Blackfeet Reservation broadened to dozens of other reservations and the accounts of hundreds of thousands of Indians. The government admits it doesn't even have valid addresses for 50,000 who are due money.

Left incredulous by such revelations, Judge Lamberth has called it one of the worst cases of government fiscal irresponsibility in US history.

Since the end of the frontier era in the West, Indian communities have suffered severe poverty, says Jim Adams, managing editor of the newspaper Indian Country Today, which devotes a story nearly daily to the Cobell case. He says there's no doubt that fixing the fund would put reservation citizens on a more equal economic footing with neighboring communities.

Congressman Dennis Rehberg (R) of Montana, whose own non-Indian relatives operated stores on the Crow Reservation in the state, says that many woes of native communities are directly related to the fact that Indians never fully understood the assets they control because government record-keeping kept them in the dark.

Cobell herself is actively involved in rebuilding her community, where unemployment exceeds 75 percent. When she's not off monitoring the trial or delivering lectures, the wife of a Blackfeet rancher and mother of a grown son directs a business development fund on the reservation here.

Cobell's office resides in an old building suffering from a bad case of chipped paint. Stacked around her are boxes full of legal and accounting documents, walls covered with Indian artwork, and a tidy desk with an accountant's calculator. Behind her are photos of her and national leaders.

Despite a growing circle of supporters, Cobell confesses that, often since filing the lawsuit in 1996, she has felt isolated.

"In the beginning, there was just Elouise and a few other people. Along the way, she has confronted resistance from the government and other Indians, but today her resolve has brought a lot of very influential people together," says her close friend, The Rev. Dan Powers, a Jesuit priest at St. Anne's Catholic Parish in nearby Heart Butte.

Cobell also has many detractors – including some native Americans. Earl Old Person, Blackfeet tribal chairman, worries that a settlement that removes the BIA from trust management could hurt Indians, providing grounds for terminating the government's trust relationship with tribes that depend on funding.

With a pained expression, Cobell recalls BIA officials calling her "stupid" to her face as she persisted in tracking trust-fund money. But she had her day when the MacArthur Foundation named her a recipient of its prestigious genius award, a fellowship given annually to those making a profound difference in society. She applied her $300,000 award to lawsuit expenses.

COLLECTIVE IMPACT

"One of the persistent rumors I always hear is that I'm going to somehow collect millions of dollars in reward money for taking on the lawsuit," she says, shaking her head. "I stand to gain no more than any other trust fund recipient.... It's the collective impact of a settlement that I'm most optimistic about.
"

The government has fiercely resisted a settlement, and just a few weeks ago, Secretary Norton announced a costly new plan to fix the broken accounting system – on top of $600 million already spent to putthe trust-fund books in order. But Indians and some Interior officials aren't confident it can work.

Cobell says the government ought to just admit the system is irretrievably flawed, stop throwing taxpayer money away, and settle the case.

"I've heard from friends that the government thinks I'm tired and that eventually they'll wear me down, so that I'll just go away," Cobell says.

But with the haunting outline of Ghost Ridge serving as a constant reminder of challenges confronted by native people in the past, Cobell says she has no intention to surrender.

Honored Guests: 8-8:30 PM (PST):

(Very Tentative) Principal Chief Brenda Dadar-Robichaux of the United Houma Nation:

Last week we had Indigenous Environmental Network spokesperson & staffer, Clayton Thomas-Muller on to speak in regards to the recent Hurricane Gustav that touched down in New Orleans and also impacted (once again) the tribal lands nearby, especially those of the United Houma Nation. IEN has helped bring attention to an Indigenous region & her people that main stream media has forgotten. NAMAPAHH First People’s Radio and other native radio stations & programs like NNN & NAC (see below for Monday’s interview with Principal Chief Dadar-Robichaux happening earlier tomorrow) have not forgotten them.

In fact, in 2005, NAMAPAHH gave weekly updates and asked for help on behalf of the United Houma Nation and other tribes, as well as others who had their world torn apart by the Hurricanes & the deadly floods.
We have asked Principal Chief Dadar-Robichaux to be on NAMPAHH last week & we missed her call, we have left the invitation open but the messages as hard to get to her because they have been without power & she is overwhelmed with trying to help her tribal members- some who reportedly have lost their homes at this point.

Special thanks to Tom Goldtooth of IEN who made arrangements for Mr. Clayton Thomas-Muller (IEN staffer) to call in at 8:30 PM (last week):
"He (Clayton Thomas- Muller) has been down to the homeland of Brenda and the Houma people. FYI - During and after Katrina/Rita, our IEN organization worked with Brenda profiling the impacts her communities experienced from the hurricanes. We linked their issues to the work our organization is doing on energy and climate justice. During November 2005, we took Brenda with our IEN delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Montreal, Canada. It is in this way that Clayton is familiar with Brenda and the Houma people."

And just before we went on air last Monday night, a new message from Tom:
“Chief Robichaux called me 1 hr. ago. She says she will call in at 10:30 her time (CST). She had electrical power outages. Where she lives, she is okay, but she doesn't know that status of the broader Houma tribal communities. She says she has been getting many calls from her tribal members wanting to know if they could return to their homes. She was critical of news blackout of rural areas, especially the bayou-coastal areas west of New Orleans. Most news are focusing only on the city of New Orleans.

I just heard one of the parishes (counties) of some of the communities where her tribal members are located are 100% without electricity (per WDSU-TV New Orleans, that was broadcasting on C-SPAN).”

So, if we do not hear from her- we will continue to send our thoughts & prayers & hope that those who can help, will. Here is an earlier call to action by Brenda via IEN:

For your information:

Below is a communiqu̩ put out by Brenda Dardar Robichaux, Principal Chief of the United Houma Nation. It is dated Friday, August 29, 2008. Following her statement, we have listed the name and contact information of the United Houma Nation Relief Fund. This Relief Fund was created in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which helped thousands of tribal members return home and re-build their communities. Even though it is unpredictable on what level of impact hurricane Gustav will have, we are looking at reports from television news stations that hurricane Gustav could hit New Orleans with some mapping evidence that appears it could impact the region west of New Orleans. If this is so, people must know that the communities of the Houma Nation are located west of New Orleans, in the bayou coastal area of Louisiana. We are posting Principle Chief Dardar-Robichaux's statement and contact information. РThank you for your support of the Houma Peoples, Tom G., IEN.

Message from the Principal Chief

Brenda Dardar Robichaux

8/29/08
It's difficult to imagine that on the third anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, we are threatened with the possibility of being in the same position that we were three years ago. But please be assured we have learned many lessons, and we are better prepared than we were then. We are all keeping a watchful eye on Gustav and are aware of the impact he could have on our communities. We would urge each and everyone of you in the threat zone to evacuate if you are able to on your own or contact your local officials immediately if you need assistance. We have reached out and are coordinating with the local offices of emergency preparedness in all of our communities to ensure that they are aware of your needs. We are four days from expected landfall and realize that Hurricane Gustav's track can change many times. Please continue to check the web site. We will do our best to keep you updated and provide you with information as thing progress.
I pray the Creator blesses us with strength and courage during these difficult times.

Native America Calling Airs Live

Monday - Friday, 1-2pm Eastern

Monday, September 8, 2008 - Crisis on America's Coasts:
As many members of the United Houma Nation can attest that after Hurricanes Gustav and Katrina, storms are wreaking havoc on communities in coastal areas. As large storms get more frequent and more intense, many experts say that the increase is directly linked to global warming. As sea levels rise and weather becomes more unpredictable, how will Native peoples who have lived near the sea since time immemorial cope? Is global warming to blame for troubles along the coasts? Invited guests include Brenda Dardar-Robichaux, Principle Chief of the United Houma Nation.
PS: Special thanks to Dorinda Moreno; Tom Goldtooth; IEN; Amalia, Hanna, and many others who have kept an eye & so much more on this region and for the incredible outreach they are doing.

Here is more info & please take time to watch the "youtube" video that I found a link for on IEN's site: http://www.ienearth.org/

"A network of Indigenous Peoples empowering Indigenous Nations and communities towards sustainable livelihoods, demanding environmental justice and maintaining the Sacred Fire of our traditions."

Brenda Dardar Robichaux

Winner of 2008 Woman of Vision Award: After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated her tribe in Southeastern Louisiana, displacing more than 6,000 of their 17,000 members, Robichaux quickly mobilized to meet the immediate needs of the Houma Nation and established training in non-traditional jobs for women and leadership programming for girls.

“Singing from the Heart: Mother & Son Fulfill Lifelong Dream”

http://www.alaskawellness.com/jul-aug08/heartsinging.htm

“Upon turning 40, my firstborn son Greg shared with me his long-time secret wish: to sing and professionally record music. I was surprised and excited because for many years that had also been a secret wish of mine.
I still remember purchasing my first baritone ukulele from Sears and Roebuck when I was 12 years old. I used to sit alone in my bedroom for hours, singing and strumming. Back then, we had lots of sing-alongs at my parents’ house. People would come from miles around to eat and sing and play music. Out of tune or in, it didn’t matter. My favorite times were when I got to sing with my older brother, Larry. We had a few favorite songs such as Love of the Common People and Get Together. These were some of the songs that Greg learned to sing along with as a little boy.”

I really appreciate everyone who has been a guest on our show- I have learned so much about the issues, concerns, talents & gifts so many Indigenous people have going on & the wisdom of our Elders, some who have walked on.

My Mom is now my co-host & she will be out of commission for several weeks, after this Thursday, recovering from much needed knee surgery- please keep her in your thoughts & prayers. She is scared, but she will get through it. She will definitely be on with me tonight!

8:30-10PM (PST):

Coverage of the Breaking news for Hurricane Gustav & the impact this new hurricane & others have had on the United Houma Nation, since 2005….

On a VERY somber note- who could miss the breaking news about the new hurricane that has now touched down in the South...Gustav is moving through the area- causing new upheaval in a part of the United States that was barely getting on its feet, after the complete devastation due to Hurricanes Katrina & Rita three years ago.

Yesterday I spoke briefly to a woman named Charlene who answered the phone at the United Houma Nation Relief Center. She was going to see if their Principal Chief, Brenda Dadar could call in at 8:30 PM tonight to give us an update. I have not heard from them this morning, but was able to leave a message on the number posted in the email below. However, Tom Goldtooth of IEN has made arrangements for Mr. Clayton Thomas-Muller (IEN staffer) to call in at 8:30 PM, in case Brenda can't- we can make room for them both, regardless:

"He (Clayton Thomas- Muller) has been down to the homeland of Brenda and the Houma people. FYI - During and after Katrina/Rita, our IEN organization worked with Brenda profiling the impacts her communities experienced from the hurricanes. We linked their issues to the work our organization is doing on energy and climate justice. During November 2005, we took Brenda with our IEN delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Montreal, Canada. It is in this way that Clayton is familiar with Brenda and the Houma people."

At 9/9:30PM , we will rebroadcast parts of a past NAMAPAHH show that gives a spotlight to fundraising efforts that the Tulalip tribes hosted on behalf of the 911 & Hurricane victims of 2005. Featured will be interviews with past Tulalip Tribes board member Les Parks; music & interviews with Nicole Fournier & Duffy Bishop (time permitting) and their bands...also past hurricane survival victims thanking everyone from the Tulalip Amphitheatre stage. Ect...(special note: In 2005-past NAMAPAHH co-host, Jerome Edge helped with the coverage of this benefit event). This will fill out the rest of NAMAPAHH’s two hours.

ONLINE PETITION FOR EXECUTIVE CLEMENCY

=+=+=+=+=+=

September 12th, 2008

Happy Birthday Leonard!

Once again, we have created an online birthday card for Leonard Peltier. This online card will be printed out on September 2nd, 2008 and will be sent to Leonard.

To add your wishes to this birthday card, please send a text message, or a photograph, or a nice graphic to:
peltier-bd2008@skynet.be
Yes indeed, this year you can send in pictures!!!
Suggestions: a photograph of yourself wearing a Free Peltier t-shirt, carrying a banner, holding a photograph of Leonard, holding a birthday cake, participating at a (past) Peltier event...
But sending in a photograph or picture is not necessary. A plain text message is okay. And if you can't find the words... a simple "Happy Birthday" with your name is just fine too! :-)

When sending in your birthday wish, please do not forget to add your name, your city and state or country! Leonard likes to see that his supporters and friends live all across the globe.
Needless to say: we will not post anonymous messages.

Please note that your messages and pictures will not be posted automatically. We add them "manually" after filtering out the nasty or crazy messages. Sadly enough, there are always idiots out there who send those irritating messages.
Once your B.D. wish is posted, you will receive a confirming message. New additions will appear at the bottom of the list.
http://users.skynet.be/kola/lp-bd2008.htm

In the past years, hundreds of supporters worldwide signed the online birthday card. Let's do it again, folks and make this a GIANT surprise card for Leonard.

Remember: the deadline is September 2nd !!!

Okay, we're ready for your B.D. messages...

Warm regards to all,

Els & Vivienne
