JAHnessa

Silence, they say, is the voice of complicity.

But silence is impossible.

Silence screams.

Silence is a message,
just as doing nothing is an act.

Let who you are ring out & resonate
in every word & every deed.

Yes, become who you are.

There’s no sidestepping your own being
or your own responsibility.

What you do is who you are.

You are your own comeuppance.

You become your own message.

You are the message.

Add Today's Date: ____________

Attn: Meade County Auditor
Meade County Board of Commissioners
1425 Sherman Street
Sturgis, SD 67625
Via fax: 605-347-5925
via email: meade@meadecounty.org

Dear County Commissioners:

I oppose the annual on-sale & off sale liquor license renewal's for all Rally locations surrounding Bear Butte, including but not limited to, Broken Spoke Campground, Glencoe Campground/Rockin the Rally and Buffalo Chip.

The annual on-sale & Off sale liquor license renewal should be denied because the locations are not suitable.

Bear Butte is sacred land. There is extensive documentation of the spiritual and historical significance of Bear Butte to the area. Each summer for thousands of years, people have traveled hundreds of miles, to Bear Butte to worship and conduct their sacred ceremonies. People travel to Bear Butte for healing, guidance, spiritual renewal and to fast on the sacred mountain.

The Meade County Commissioners have arbitrarily decided location is not a issue, over the past three years. There is NO justification for this continual decision, the failure to take into account the Tribes repeated requests in regards to location, is not acceptable. Location IS a ISSUE for the people that continue to travel to Bear Butte to pray, and for the generations yet to come. This will never change and we will continue to oppose until the MCC realizes that location, is in fact, a issue.

This decision is a direct violation of the, American Indian Freedom of Religion Act of 1978, in addition to Executive Order 13007 Protection and Accommodation of Access to "Indian Sacred Sites" signed by President Clinton on May 24, 1996.

These large scale commercial developments invite noise and cumulative impacts of increased traffic and travel, which all stand to adversely impact the natural serenity and tranquility needed for cultural, ceremonial and other visitations to Bear Butte. They also negatively impact the experience of people who enjoy the spiritual, cultural, and natural resources at Bear Butte. Issues include, the unsuitability of this location, unacceptable noise and disturbance that this location continues to cause, to those who travel to Bear Butte who need solitude and serenity.

The application should be denied on the basis that the applicants are not suitable characters to hold license(s) as proposed.

On Monday, August 4th 2008 these venues created complete chaos with noise, helicopters and several hours of gridlock traffic from Interstate 90, through Sturgis onto Highway 79. Tens of thousands of people, traveled onto Highway 79 to attend these concerts being held at these locations on the same night, all directly next to, and effecting Bear Butte.

These venues fail to take into account local concerns of impacts to the spiritual, cultural, and natural resources at Bear Butte. Bear Butte is a place of prayer where the natural environment needs to be free from negative influences of alcohol that could affect religious beliefs and practices of those who travel to Bear Butte to pray.

I respectfully request for the Meade County Commissioners to DENY ALL of the liquor license renewals for the renewal's for all Rally locations surrounding Bear Butte, including but not limited to, Broken Spoke Campground, Glencoe Campground/Rockin the Rally and Buffalo Chip.

Sincerely,
PLEASE INSERT YOUR full legal name

Jeri Baker - Director, One Spirit

The ONE Spirit Mission is to assist the Lakota people in preserving and revitalizing the Lakota culture, language, and self-sufficiency while meeting the basic needs of Lakota families, children, and elders. We support the initiatives of the Lakota in planning and carrying out programs that allow them to care for and enhance the lives of their people.

Percy White Plume - Director, Sung Nagi Okolakiciye (Horse Spirit Society and Sanctuary)
Percy is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Nation. He has lived on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation his entire life on his family's land and is fluent in the Lakota language. He has worked in the mental health care field for many years. He has conducted horse camps and rides for youth and families for over 10 years. He is the chief coordinator of the "Big Foot Ride" that occurs in December of each year in commemoration of Wounded Knee and "Youth Rides Across the Homeland" - a 4 day ride across the entire length of the reservation designed to acquaint the youth with the beauty of their homeland and to instill in them a pride in their heritage.

People of Rosebud & Pine Ridge Reservations are in need of emergency assistance following severe blizzard & weather conditions…even though the weather has warmed up, more severe storms are expected to come to the Region throughout the Winter. Children, elderly, disabled, and sick are in need of heat and winter necessities. On Nov. 5th, they were recently slammed by high winds, rain and snow storms. According to Robert E. Eagle Elk, CAP District Coordinator for Pine Ridge, SD "this was an early storm for us" and they were not prepared for the extent of this storm, which knocked out electricity, due to 100's of power poles going down in the storms. Eagle Elk said roads were impassable in some places. Some went without power for a couple of weeks and are still in great need of even some basic items. "Circle of Hope- A Circle of Giving"

Eagle Elk said roads were impassable in some places. Some went without power for a couple of weeks and are still in great need of even some basic items.

The Tulalip Boys & Girls Club-Tulalip Multi-Media Youth Club has formed a "Circle of Hope- A Circle of Giving" with the following: Tulalip Tribes; T.E.R.O; Tulalip Resort & Casino; Tulalip Lion's Club; and Building Partnerships for a Brighter Future.

We are looking for unsoiled, preferably new items of clothing, warm jackets, sweaters, thermals, NEW blankets, shoes- for winter weather; warm hats, gloves, scarves, and boots. Sleeping bags; matches, lighters; charcoal briquettes; Flash lights with batteries in them; NOAA weather radios (can purchased at Home Depot, maybe other places-online too!), Kerosene lanterns; Batteries of all types especially AA and C, Candles; Disposable diapers in sizes: 3 and up (toddlers); Baby formula; hygiene items, TP; Food items should be NON-PERISHABLE; Beef Jerky; Commodities; Snack items.

Bigger items requested were actual woodstoves. I know one of the reservations has a wood supply (Rosebud). But they could use volunteers on their end with working chainsaws, etc to help buck up the firewood & get it to the homes. Please contact both Reservations to ask about this. Generators & burner propane ranges, or Colman stoves with propane would come in handy.

Since this is pre-Christmas, if folks want to send new toys & stuffed animals, unbreakable Christmas ornaments, stockings, etc- we would include those as well.

Empty boxes that can be sealed closed or with lids that can be taped closed; packing tape; plastic garbage bags.

Special thanks to:

Owner Sean Skiles and Pioneer Market Staff (Ali Carter Jamie Reinstra & others) from La Conner WA-who donated new children's T-shirts, adult sweatshirts and some food items. They were quick to donate a box of these items.

In addition, to the TYMMC- TBGC members/youth (ages 11-13 yrs old) who volunteered to inventory & sort out incoming donations at the TBGC. Dustin also helped wash & dry clothes that needed it- (reminder-and we are asking for folks to bring in CLEAN ones from now on. To save in the work ahead as more donations come in.)

The biggest challenge is getting all the donations back there. Therefore- we have a "Call to Truckers.” If they can donate space on their rigs & can make a drop to one or both Reservations, they should get in touch with us as soon as possible. We would like to send everything off no later than Dec 17th, so it gets there by Christmas.
Special shout out & thanks to:

Press Release from NAMA:

The non-profit arm of the Awards, Native American Music Association, a 501(c)(3) has recently launched a Winter Aid relief effort for the Lakota people living on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations in conjunction with the Link Center Foundation. A recent Blizzard on November 5th knocked out over one thousand power lines, created 20ft snow drifts, and sub zero degree weather declaring a State of Emergency. The Association has established a target goal of raising $15,000 to directly purchase emergency propane, electric, and wood for Elders, Disabled & children who are living without heat or electricity on the Pine Ridge Reservation and has created a list of local schools, churches, ministries in both Pine Ridge and Rose Bud to send Winter items.

At present, 10% of the Association's total target goal has already been achieved thanks to the recent donations of individuals across the country. The Association has already purchased and ensured the direct delivery of propane to multiple households of elders and children in the districts of Pine Ridge, Allen, and Porcupine throughout the Pine Ridge reservation with those donations. A NAMA task force has been mobilized to better gage local needs throughout all districts and are working with Community Action Program offices (CAP), many of whom have Elder Councils. The last report stated there were some outlying areas still without some power and that propane, electric heat, wood and wood stoves remain widely needed. For more information or to make a donation, visit the Special programs page on the Native American Music Awards website.

=====================================================
Greetings,
I am speaking to you about a small local non-profit charitable organization based in Sterling, Ks that has been in business 6 years. We provide clothing, household goods and other needs to those living in poverty conditions in the central states. We also provided for the needs of local residents who have lost their homes as a result of fires or other natural disasters. We make regular trips to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Central South Dakota, providing the same services to the Native Americans residing in sub-poverty conditions.
My name is J. Porter Selman, Founder and et al of Web of Life Enterprises, Inc. www.wole.org/
Our organization is supported solely by the donations of concerned citizens of this country, and some residing in other countries. During this time of social and economic upheaval in our country, donations have dropped extremely low, making it difficult to help others.
While many are sympathetic to the needs and misfortunes of others, it is often hard to comprehend the extent of the difficulties some people on Indian Reservations can face. With unemployment on the reservations reaching as high as 85%, and 45% of the children living below the governmental poverty standards and a life expectancy of only 45 years, it is clear to see that America is not always a place of liberty and justice for all.
While some tribes seem to be thriving with their casinos, it's important to realize that very little of that money ever reaches the people who are most in need. We are used to seeing the faces of poverty overseas, but in fact, there are many faces right here at home that can use our help.
The poverty on these reservations is so severe many can not afford heat in the winter, or warm coats and blankets. Many don't have electricity or a telephone, things we take for granted. The lack of funding has created an absence or lack of adequate prevention and intervention programs throughout Indian Country. Culturally, American Indian people believe that children are both sacred and the hope of the future.
The federal government, which promised in treaties to provide for Native Americans, spends less than half as much per tribal member as it does for programs covering other Americans.
Housing must be paid for, which goes against the stipulations in the treaties, HUD is responsible for this housing. Why do these people have to pay to live in sub-standard housing, and where is the money going? Certainly not into repairs or to provide adequate housing for the many homeless that wander about the reserve.
While it is not possible to "fix" all the problems within the Indian communities, it is possible to implement programs that help feed the elders and children, provide heat in the cold winters.
Web of Life Enterprises seeks to bring some comfort and help to those who are suffering on the reservations as well as those in immediate need. We strive to end the hardships that some people have faced, especially the children, and I am calling on you for your help and assistance in furthering our goals. Money, goods and services are all required to bring change, to providing better housing, decent food, warm clothing and blankets, and snow boots and coats for children who sometimes have to walk to the nearest schools or community centers for meals.
In a place where winter seems to begin just after it has ended, contributions of money, goods or services that are so hard to come by in these remote areas, will not only alleviate discomfort, but can also provide the means for people on these reservations to work towards bettering the future for the children.
Thank you for your attention, may the Great Spirit Bless you in all ways.

Elder's Meditation of the Day - November 28

"People say that crisis changes people and turns ordinary people into wiser or more responsible ones."

--Wilma Mankiller, CHEROKEE

There is a saying, conflict precedes clarity. The Medicine Wheel teachings say, in order for something to change it must first go through a struggle. When a crisis enters our lives, other powers are there to help us. We will learn some lessons. Will I honor and respect the next crisis?

Great Spirit, if a crisis occurs today, let me learn the lessons of wisdom.

Greetings,
I am speaking to you about a small local non-profit charitable organization based in Sterling, Ks that has been in business 6 years. We provide clothing, household goods and other needs to those living in poverty conditions in the central states. We also provided for the needs of local residents who have lost their homes as a result of fires or other natural disaters.
Certaintly not into repairs or to provide adequite housing for the many homeless that wander about the reserve.
In a place where winter seems to begin just after it has ended, contibutions of money, goods or services that are so hard to come by in these remote areas, will not only alleviate discomfort, but can also provide the means for people on these reservations to work towards bettering the future for the children.
Thank you for your attention, may the Great Spirit Bless you in all ways.

Elder's Meditation of the Day - November 27

Elder's Meditation of the Day - November 27

"The Natural Law is a spiritual law. Its powers are both light and dark."

--Oren R. Lyons, Spokesman Traditional Circle of Elders

There are some characteristics that are evident in the system which the Creator made. He made balance, harmony and polarity. In other words, every (+) plus has a (-) minus. Every positive has a negative; every up has a down; every problem has a solution. The Spiritual Law is the same-it has light and dark. Both are good, so both need to be honored. Lessons can be learned on both sides.

Great Spirit, teach me the powers of the Natural Laws.

We are looking for unsoiled, preferably new items of clothing, warm jackets, sweaters, thermals, NEW blankets, shoes- for winter weather; warm hats, gloves, scarves, and boots.Sleeping bags; matches, lighters; charcoal brickets; Flash lights with batteries in them; NOAA weather radios (can purchased at Home Depot, maybe other places-online too!), Kerosene lanterns; Batteries of all types especially AA and C, Candles; Disposable diapers in sizes: 3 and up (toddlers); Baby formula; hygiene items, TP; Food items should be NON-PERISHABLE; Beef Jerkey; Commodities; Snack items.

Bigger items requested were actual woodstoves.

"People and nations who understand the Natural Law are self-governing, following the principles of love and respect that insure freedom and peace."

--Traditional Circle of Elders, NAVAJO-HOPI Joint Use Area

The Natural Laws work hand-in-hand with the circle. Each part of a circle will look to the center and will see something different. For example, if you put an irregular shaped object in the center of a circle and you have people standing in a circle around the object, each one will describe it differently. Everyone in the circle will be right. Only by honoring and respecting everyone's input, can the truth about the object be revealed. We need to learn to honor differences.

My Creator, let me honor all differences

Call For Action: NAMA Committed to Assisting Throughout Winter Season For SD Rezs~

ah see um-

I am sending you all a new Press Release because this is very exciting news....since doing our radio show Saturday, many have started to amp up efforts to get help out to the South Dakota Region, especially on at least two of the Reservations- Pine Ridge and Rosebud. As you can see in this press release, our reach can be far, with this grass roots rally around these communities,NOW turning into an International effort as well.

Each one of us can help. Locally I have recruited a friend of mine who brought in warm jackets, clothing and sweaters, from he & his church(thank you Mark Olsen & friends...and he said he will be back after next Sunday as well.) I am stockpiling these items, now added to some food I donated & tomorrow I am picking up donations from our local Pioneer Market in La Conner Market, a few miles from the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. Another friend emailed & said she donated to two of the groups- financially. And so it has begin! On Eagles wings!

I've also been receiving phone calls, emails & in person inquiries from Tulalip Tribal members, who want to help. We have set up a donation box at the Tulalip Boys & Girls Club, that have agreed to be a receiving drop off point for donations. I am going to see if our teens want to start sorting & packing up things & addressing them to the places we are to send them off to. I am hoping we will get at least one semi-truck full to send off in a week or so. Sooner I hope.

This is what it is all about....giving is good-giving is GREAT in this case, it will make for an easier this winter for many folks. How many generations of people have had to live like this- rationing heat sources? It is heart wrenching.

I hope this news hits the door of the White House, the out going & incoming administration needs to act & act now. This is the first part of Winter, we can ward off a worst case scenario if we act now!

Thanks to all the side efforts going on as well....there are many organizations & individuals doing their part. Check the mypspace bulletins & we will keep updating you too!

May the Creator & White Buffalo Calf Woman watch over these folks- Help is on the Way!

Robin & the NAMAPAHH First People's Radio Family....

CALL FOR ACTION

People of Rosebud & Pine Ridge Reservations in Need of Emergency Assistance Following Severe Blizzard & Weather Conditions

Children, Elderly, Disabled, and Sick In Need of Heat and Winter Necessities

"About 60% of the Elders on Pine Ridge have sole custody of their grandchildren or great-grandchildren so there are often small children in the home, also at risk."

NAMA Committed to Assisting Throughout Winter Season

The Native American Music Association, N.A.M.A., a non profit 501(c)(3), (Fed Id# 13-4032761) is heeding the requests of NAMAPAAH Radio and is joining in the effort to provide emergency clothing, and heating/utility assistance for the Elders, children, the disabled, and the sick on the Rosebud & Pine Ridge Reservations in South Dakota throughout this Winter season. N.A.M.A. is calling upon its international membership to make a donation in which ALL funds will go directly to providing clothing to local churches and schools on the Reservations as well as emergency heating/utility assistance determined by the application process of the Link Center Foundation's primary program. N.A.M.A. is also building a task force consisting of Winners, Nominees & Volunteer Staff in South Dakota to assist in filing emergency applications for those most in need of heat and Winter clothing on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations.

The current goal is to raise over $15,000.00 in donations which will provide all current application approved households with several weeks of emergency propane and winter clothing. Fuel vendors will be paid directly. A list of fuel vendors is available for those interested. Additionally, an open line of communication is available with Propane companies in the event they refer an emergency recipient, i.g, , Lakota Plains Propane Co. on Pine Ridge. Assistance is provided in the order applications are received or in cases of dire or life-threatening emergencies which then take precedence. Propane is currently running about $2.20 to $2.50 per gallon. Fuel costs have risen about 33% in the last year. The various propane companies are requiring $120-$150 minimum purchase per delivery.

Sadly, some of the elders in the back country (many of whom take care of their grandchildren) don't get into towns or local CAP offices and often miss out on obtaining emergency applications or even knowing about them. We can be of help to them!!! And most importantly, we want to be assured that the assistance goes directly to those most in need.

While need is everywhere, particularly at this time of crisis, there are no greater needs than those of the Elders, children, disabled, and ill on these reservations. They have the lowest income, the least ability to gain funds, and often suffer from such serious health issues as to be severely impaired by the cold. Even worse, for the most part, they are the least able to travel to get assistance or to get someplace that might be warm. Moreover, according to the last Federal census, about 60% of the Elders on Pine Ridge have sole custody of their grandchildren or great-grandchildren so there are often small children in the home, also at risk.

We are depending on YOU, the individual donor, to help us help these families in crisis. DONATE NOW through N.A.M.A.'s website.

FACTS: Average income on the Oglala Lakota Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation is about $3,500.00 per YEAR. Jobs are extremely scarce; unemployment hovers around 85% on this 11,000-square-mile reservation which houses about 40,000 people. The other Lakota Reservations face similar economic conditions.

Death by hypothermia is always a concern on the reservations. Each winter (October – March), temperatures drop well below 0*F. Many families must choose between food and heat. In some cases, they have neither.

Federal LHEAP and Tribal Assistance Programs offer each low-income family approximately $300 per year. With the current rate of propane at $2.20 per gallon, this provides only 136 gallons – about enough fuel for 2 to 4 weeks (depending on the harsh weather).

For more information on the LCF Elder heating/utility application process, feel free to visit the Link Center Foundation, www.linkcenterfoundation.org.

A list of ministries, churches and schools to directly send clothing, blankets, boots, etc is available by request via email; Nammys@aol.com

Let's help ASAP. It is just unacceptable to have third world country conditions in the middle of America! We need to help them not only during this crisis, but throughout the entire Winter Season.

Please make a donation by clicking the donate button on the Native American Music Awards' website, "Special Programs" page.

NOTE FROM NAMA'S FOUNDER

The Native American Music Awards & Association would like to assist those on Pine Ridge & Rosebud with their winter crisis.

The inspiration for our entire organization, was given to us by the youth on Rosebud and Pine Ridge over 12 years ago. We are well aware of the difficulties and conditions facing those on Pine Ridge and Rosebud and it would be a wonderful effort for myself and our organization to come full circle and assist those there that are most in need. Not only in this crisis - but on a continuing basis.

It just amazes me at times that the mainstream or others throughout the world do not realize we still have third world country conditions existing in the middle of America. Without Rosebud or Pine Ridge, there would be no NAMMYS today, and it is imperative that we make others aware of the hardships the Lakota face.

We believe we have secured the best possible methods to offer the most direct assistance and reach those most in need, whether its money, diapers, toys, food, water, etc.

We look forward to your assistance. Visit our website www.nativeamericanmusicawards.com the Special Programs Page to make your donation now.

All week I have been getting alerts about the storms that have hammered parts of South Dakota. Snow blizzards have been causing the brunt of the power outages and there are people who have especially been hit hard on some of the Reservations. Rescue efforts have begun, but others can't get out or do not want to leave their homes. We can help out by sending food, warm clothes, blankets, money to non-profits helping with the rescue efforts. Tune in Saturday at 10am-noon (when I/my callers have free minutes) and we will focus our energy, love and prayers on South Dakota and the Rez's who need help at this time, due to the season of Winter starting for them now...

Please tell your friends and family to listen, call in as well, if they have news from that area, first hand stories and or ideas and/or can offer ideas of their own.

The Pine Ridge Reservation has been hit by a recent severe blizzard causing loss of power to their Reservation. Many families on the Reservation can't afford to heat their homes in the extreme weather conditions in South Dakota during the winter.

Indigneous People International has begun a Fundraising page to help the families who are in great need for heat sources, food, basic needs and warm clothing. Many of these families are very poor. Donations and gifts are requested.

If you would like to donate and send a gift, you can send the gift to:

Cangleska, Inc
1 Cangleska Road
Kyle, SD 57752

Send gifts via UPS or FedEx Ground

Please include a brief note with your gift to let them know you heard about this through Indigenous Peoples International and Save Our Tribal Youth.

For donations, go to the Change. org link on my MySpace page, Rick at IPI and once you are on my Change. org page for Indigenous Peoples International, click Fundraisers at the top of the page and you can read more information on this fundraiser (HELP THE FAMILIES OF PINE RIDGE RESERVATION). YOU can also start your own fundraising page on this site.

Please help these children and there families.

Thank you,

Rick at IPI

Hey Robin,
Just thought I'd give you a little heads up on what's going on down here. Luckily, my part of the reservation has been getting back to normal and came out relatively unscathed. It's Parmelee that's been hit the hardest. They're finally getting power back. They're asking, though, mainly for heat sources, water, and non-perishable food items, especially ramen noodles. If you read the Rapid City Journal, there are stories of people in Wanblee that took their family to Crazy Horse school, dropped them off, then went back to their home because of looters. The situation has been the winter version of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans almost!

Just thought I'd tell you a little bit about it. Hope all is well. And thank you for all your help on behalf of those who are in desperate need of it.

RE: a cry for help for Winona LaDuke!!!
----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
From: rezervations on www. nv1.org
Date: Nov 11, 2008 11:18 AM

Friends,

This past weekend, Winona's house had an electrical fire and the house burnt to the ground. No one was hurt. While the house and its contents are gone, the blessing is that all five kids and three grandchildren are safe.

I'm writing to you because I know Winona won't ask for help, and I also know
she really needs our support.

Winona bought her house about 20 years ago and it was filled with art, books, music, photos and other collectibles that
reflected her story and the story of her family.

What will be most missed
are these memories, and we can recreate some of them.

Photos: One positive thing about being a public figure is that lots of folks
have photos of you and your children.

We have a good collection at Honor the
Earth but I'm asking if you could go through your pictures and send photos
you have of the family, especially the kids.

Wasey and Ajuwak were born
before the digital age so a lot of the photos of them growing up are gone.

Photos would mean a lot.

Movement T-shirts and Art: The kids all had an amazing collection of
movement t-shirts that comprised the bulk of their wardrobe.

Winona
basically shopped for her kids at the events she attended around the world.

If you have any political message shirts or shirts from historic activist
events in sizes Small, Large or X-Large, I know the kids would cherish them.

Zapatista shirts are a favorite.

Also gone is Winona's amazing collection of
posters and art from decades past. I know she would appreciate any no-nukes, safe energy, anti-colonial, no-gmo and Native activist art.

Books: Winona had a library that fed her mind and soul, and that she often
turned to for research material.

If you can send books, fiction and
non-fiction, she can begin her collection again.

Lastly, Winona has a newborn grandson, Little Crow, who along with her two
toddler grandchildren lost all of their clothes and blankets.

Winter is
coming and the family could really use any warm baby clothes along with
clothes and outerwear for a two year old girl and a large two year old boy
(Giwaadan is a size 4 toddler!).

These are the things -- photos, t-shirts and art, books and baby/toddler
clothing that I think would be most helpful right now, and would touch the
family most.

Winona and the kids are renting an apartment in Detroit Lakes and will be
staying there over the winter while envisioning building a new home.

Right
now, the best shipping address is White Earth Land Recovery/Honor the Earth
office up in Calloway:

Winona LaDuke
White Earth Land Recovery Project
607 Main Avenue
Callaway, MN 56521

I am so appreciative to have all of you to turn to for support.

I send warm
thoughts and love your way, and deep thanks that we all have such a
wonderful circle of family and friends.

-- Remarkable Women...Remarkable Story

"Expertly depicts the story of the Vietnam Donut Dollies who provided comfort and support to troops in combat and captures the courage, sensitivity, commitment and humanitarian service of young women serving in Vietnam during most trying and heroic times." --Gerald DeFrancisco, President, Humanitarian Services, American Red Cross

During the Vietnam War 627 adventurous young women threw off society's expectations and headed out to learn what they could do for their country. The Vietnam "Donut Dollies" were airmobile to the front lines, dropping into dusty firebases and sweaty base camps to bring a listening ear, a silly game, and a friendly smile to combat soldiers. Their year at war armed only with a smile would affect each of them forever. Now, for the first time, their words, home movies and photographs tell the captivating, extraordinary story of women who made a difference by bringing A Touch of Home to the combat zone.

In honor of the fifteenth anniversary of the Vietnam Women's Memorial, we are pleased to announce the Veterans Day, 2008 release of A Touch of Home: The Vietnam War's Red Cross girls.

Successful Premiere
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
premiere poster The documentary premiered November 9 to a sold-out audience at the Women In Military Service to America Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Opening comments by Dr. Jim Fulbrook of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, United States Army Brigadier General (P) Gina Farrissee, and American Red Cross President for Humanitarian Services Gerald DeFrancisco introduced the tribute event to the remarkable Vietnam War American Red Cross Girls.
Remarkable Women...Remarkable Story
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We heard about the Donut Dollies through the Huey pilots who flew them, way back in 2001 when we were doing research for a documentary about a Huey's journey across America. When that journey finally lifted off years later, we met Red Cross Girls at Landing Zones around the nation. Intrigued by their story from the beginning, we soon grew enthralled with the women themselves. Spunky, vivacious, gutsy, funny, proud, and smart to a woman, the Vietnam Donut Dollies speak of their time at war with a sense of pride familiar to any soldier, marine, airman or sailor.

They were Kennedy kids "with a thirst for adventure and a desire to do something real." Their experience in Vietnam has affected each of them differently, but affected them all. This documentary captures their look back at war in their own words, with a rich collection of photos and home movies they took of the firebases and landing zones and base camps where they served.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll hear the story of your war from a woman's perspective in way you've never heard it told before. Please join us in meeting "the most remarkable women you'll ever meet" -- The Vietnam War's Red Cross Girls!
