We stream the show at : www.ksvr.org

This makes for a later live night- but we have two hours now, which is great- we are ALWAYS grateful for the airtime…(Sundays 4-5pm PST are rebroadcasts)...hopefully we will all be able to stay up late and have our talking & listening circles continue, like they have for nearly four years now.

I really appreciate everyone who has been a guest on our show- I have learned so much about the issues, concerns, talents & gifts so many Indigenous people have going on & the wisdom of our Elders, some who have walked on.

My Mom is now my co-host & she will be out of commission for several weeks, after this Thursday, recovering from much needed knee surgery- please keep her in your thoughts & prayers. She is scared, but she will get through it. She will definitely be on with me tonight!

8-8:30PM (PST): [Musically Speaking Segment]:
Gabriel Ayala- his CD Tango & the Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards:

Tonight we will be featuring Gabriel Ayala, who will be calling in to talk about his new release of beautiful music, from his CD Tango & we’ll be talking about the nomination he has received for it via the Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards. He is a return guest & I am so glad we got to hear his music in person last summer when he came to the NW. We welcome him back & support him in his endeavors. Here is some information and a personal note from Gabriel:

Gabriel Ayala, classical guitarist- Nominated recently for the Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards:

A member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona, Gabriel Ayala is at the forefront of a new generation of Native Americans making a career performing classical music. He began playing the guitar as a child, and would later study with Philip Hii. He earned a Master's Degree in Music Performance from the University of Arizona in 1997, has taught at all educational levels from elementary through college, and serves as a competition adjudicator.

Ayala performs regularly throughout the United States and has appeared at the Kennedy Center for the Arts, National Museum for the American Indian, ASU Keer Cultural Center, and Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He has been recognized by the State of Arizona and Governor Janet Napolitano for his musical achievements and has been named a Tucson Citizen of the Month as well as Artist of the Month for the IICOC(Indigenouse Internet Chamber of Commerce).

Ayala is a regular performer at the Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, bringing classical music to the Native American Community at one of the largest pow-wows in the country. Ayala also maintains connection to his cultural roots through traditional singing and dancing. Ayala resides in Tucson, Arizona.

Ayala has released three self-distributed albums. His first, "Gabriel Ayala," was nominated for a Native American Music Award, Best Independent Recording in 2003. In 2007 Ayala released a Christmas CD, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and in 2008 "Tango!" which includes many arrangements by Ayala. Ayala has recently signed with Record Label Canyon Records which is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Gabriel Ayala, classical guitarist, is one of the up and coming musicians of his time. He is becoming well-known throughout the United States as a performer. A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, Gabriel now resides in Tucson, Arizona where he received his Master of Music degree from the University of Arizona. Gabriel has taught in all levels of education from elementary to college which has helped him to become a leading pedagogue of the guitar. Gabriel has won several competitions and serves as a judge for competitions. Gabriel performs extensively throughout the United States and has had the opportunity of performing on live radio broadcasts, as well as, public and national television. In 2003, Gabriel released his self-titled debut CD and was nominated for the Native American Music Awards, otherwise known as, the NAMMYS for Best Independent Recording. In 2004, Gabriel was honored to be one of selected few to perform at the Gathering of Nations for over 30,000 people in attendance and is featured on a compilation CD of Gathering of Nations. In addition to being a solo classical guitarist, Gabriel also promotes Native culture through traditional singing and dancing. In the Native American community, Gabriel (Yaqui) has also performed with well-known Native American musicians and entertainers. Gabriel recently released a new CD entitled, "I'll be home for Christmas." This CD has 21 tracks and features a large variety of Christmas Classics. Gabriel will be releasing another CD in Late February(Guitar Recital) as well as Summer 2007(Tango!).

8:30-10PM (PST):

Coverage of the Breaking news for Hurricane Gustav & the impact this new hurricane & others have had on the United Houma Nation, since 2005….

On a VERY somber note- who could miss the breaking news about the new hurricane that has now touched down in the South...Gustav is moving through the area- causing new upheaval in a part of the United States that was barely getting on its feet, after the complete devastation due to Hurricanes Katrina & Rita three years ago.

Yesterday I spoke briefly to a woman named Charlene who answered the phone at the United Houma Nation Relief Center. She was going to see if their Principal Chief, Brenda Dadar could call in at 8:30 PM tonight to give us an update. I have not heard from them this morning, but was able to leave a message on the number posted in the email below. However, Tom Goldtooth of IEN has made arrangements for Mr. Clayton Thomas-Muller (IEN staffer) to call in at 8:30 PM, in case Brenda can't- we can make room for them both, regardless:

"He (Clayton Thomas- Muller) has been down to the homeland of Brenda and the Houma people. FYI - During and after Katrina/Rita, our IEN organization worked with Brenda profiling the impacts her communities experienced from the hurricanes. We linked their issues to the work our organization is doing on energy and climate justice. During November 2005, we took Brenda with our IEN delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Montreal, Canada. It is in this way that Clayton is familiar with Brenda and the Houma people."

At 9/9:30PM , we will rebroadcast parts of a past NAMAPAHH show that gives a spotlight to fundraising efforts that the Tulalip tribes hosted on behalf of the 911 & Hurricane victims of 2005. Featured will be interviews with past Tulalip Tribes board member Les Parks; music & interviews with Nicole Fournier & Duffy Bishop (time permitting) and their bands...also past hurricane survival victims thanking everyone from the Tulalip Amphitheatre stage. Ect...(special note: In 2005-past NAMAPAHH co-host, Jerome Edge helped with the coverage of this benefit event). This will fill out the rest of NAMAPAHH’s two hours.

Brenda Dardar Robichaux

Winner of 2008 Woman of Vision Award: After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated her tribe in Southeastern Louisiana, displacing more than 6,000 of their 17,000 members, Robichaux quickly mobilized to meet the immediate needs of the Houma Nation and established training in non-traditional jobs for women and leadership programming for girls.

September 12th, 2008

Happy Birthday Leonard!

Once again, we have created an online birthday card for Leonard Peltier. This online card will be printed out on September 2nd, 2008 and will be sent to Leonard.

To add your wishes to this birthday card, please send a text message, or a photograph, or a nice graphic to:
peltier-bd2008@skynet.be
Yes indeed, this year you can send in pictures!!!
Suggestions: a photograph of yourself wearing a Free Peltier t-shirt, carrying a banner, holding a photograph of Leonard, holding a birthday cake, participating at a (past) Peltier event...
But sending in a photograph or picture is not necessary. A plain text message is okay. And if you can't find the words... a simple "Happy Birthday" with your name is just fine too! :-)

When sending in your birthday wish, please do not forget to add your name, your city and state or country! Leonard likes to see that his supporters and friends live all across the globe.
Needless to say: we will not post anonymous messages.

Please note that your messages and pictures will not be posted automatically. We add them "manually" after filtering out the nasty or crazy messages. Sadly enough, there are always idiots out there who send those irritating messages.
Once your B.D. wish is posted, you will receive a confirming message. New additions will appear at the bottom of the list.
http://users.skynet.be/kola/lp-bd2008.htm

In the past years, hundreds of supporters worldwide signed the online birthday card. Let's do it again, folks and make this a GIANT surprise card for Leonard.

Remember: the deadline is September 2nd !!!

Okay, we're ready for your B.D. messages...

Warm regards to all,

Els & Vivienne

2008 Salmon Homecoming

Tribes, staff and friends: Now is the time to register for the 2008 Salmon Homecoming Forum and Reception on 9/11. The Forum provides the opportunity to develop a Unity Accord, which will strengthen our political network/strength through enhanced communication and commitment to stewardship. Registration and other information is available on at www.SalmonHomecoming.com, a website that will continue to be modified between now and the date of the event. Attached is the latest version of the forum agenda and the "start piece" for the Unity Agreement, which will be modified and accepted during the day. In addition to a great dinner and dessert, we anticipate a great presentation from Fabien Cousteau (grandson of the famed Jacques Cousteau and an outstanding oceanographer in his own right), aa big screen showing of "Shadow of the Salmon" in the Great Hall in The Aquarium and an outstanding opportunity to commemorate 9/11 with our brothers and sisters of other ethnic backgrounds. Please plan to come! Cultural celebrations, a salmon bake, arts and crafts, educational exhibits (please register to bring yours!) and much more will continue from Friday, 9/12-Sunday, 9/14.
