The Billion Gallon Challenge: A Call for Truly Advanced Biofuels Options

Advanced biofuels, such as cellulosic sources—including grass, wood waste, and even garbage—will add diversity to our transportation fuel mix, reduce heat-trapping emissions from transportation, and will move us beyond our exclusive reliance on conventional, food-based biofuel sources. But while successful in the lab, the advanced biofuel industry has been withering on the vine. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency was forced to waive over 90 percent of the amount required for this year in the federal Renewable Fuel Standard due to lack of advanced fuels production capacity.

Much like advanced vehicle technologies, such as hybrid drivetrains, advanced biofuels must now get the resources they need to prove their commercial viability through a suite of support and standards. In that effort, UCS has initiated the Billion Gallon Challenge – a campaign to get the first billion gallons of cellulosic biofuels to market by 2015.

Scientists and economists have special standing to highlight both the value and the need for the first billion gallons of advanced biofuels. Please join in the call for a truly advanced biofuels market. We will use this statement to help educate state and federal policy makers and alert you as key policy opportunities occur.
